Lock down drill

At dinner tonight, I asked the kids about their day at school. Sarah said, "We had a lock down drill this afternoon." In my mind, I'm shouting
WHAT!!
I calmly asked lots of questions like, why? She explained that if some guy or kid came into their school with guns, that the teachers would have to lock the door and the kids would all have to hide against one wall, crouched down with their hands covering their heads. They had to do this for 6 minutes today, until their teacher received an all clear over the little radio transmitter things.

Gosh, Do you remember the good old days when we had fire drills, even earthquake drills( since I grew up in Southern Calif), but never lock down drills. I understand and support the importance of being prepared. But how sad that our kids have to worry about somebody coming into their school and killing them.

Nibley Elementary has had one lock down while I was working there, Providence had one a couple of years ago, South Cache has had a couple in the last couple of years... It is a little more exciting than the bombing drills we had as a kid living near Hill Air Force Base during the cold war. At least the kids and teachers know what to do and how to act.

Hi- I'm glad kids this age are learning what to do. You never know if something like that could happen. It was the most scariest thing that I had to go through and something I will always remember.

Oh Rebecca, I agree with you HOW SAD!! I am glad they are teaching them for sure! BUT it is really sad! I wish this world was more peaceful and that we could not worry about sending them to school! She sounds like she knows what to do which is a really good thing!! Good for her!

I have two words for you. Home school. Just kidding! It is always better to be prepared and plan for all possibilities. Even the scary ones.

It is interesting that the schools here are already locked, all the time. A secretary has to buzz you in and out and they usually meet you at the door! It was kind of a culture shock to learn to come to school like that.
