I'm a Food Storage Addict

This blog is long, but I wanted to remember my feelings and thoughts.

About a month and half ago, a very strong impression come to me that we needed to get our 3 month supply of food storage (as a minimum). About a week later our ward had a mini enrichment food storage class. Again the feeling came to me. So, this blog is about my food storage discovery .

1st -I've done a lot of reading on line to figure out what and how much we needed.
I didn't realize that for a family of 7 for 3 months you need:
Wheat: 225 lbs Honey: 4lbs
Flour:37 lbs Sugar: 60 lbs
Corn meal (popcorn):37 lbs Corn Syrup: 4 lbs
Pasta: 37 lbs Jam: 4 lb
Rice: 75 lbs Fruit drink: 9 lb
Shortening: 6 lbs Dry milk: 90 lbs
Veg Oil: 3 gal Evap Milk: 18 cans
Peanut Butter: 6 lbs Vinegar: 2 gal
Beans, dry: 45 lbs Yeast: 2 lbs
Bleach: 2 gallons Salt: 10 lbs
Water: enough for 2 weeks about 98 gallons

Of course this is not a complete list. Just a beginning.

2nd - The next thing I did was talk to a lot of other people to find out what they are doing. Interestingly enough, almost all the people I talked to have had the same feeling come over them about the same time.

3rd - I listened with interest to a 5th Sunday mtg at church last week. Our Bishop went around to 5 families in our ward two weeks before that and asked them from that moment on to not go to the store at all for 2 weeks and report at the 5th Sunday mtg. They were to keep a daily journal of how they felt and what they ate.
The outcome- 1 family lived off the generosity of their neighbors. They were not prepared. Another went to their parents house for dinner almost every night.
The other 3 lived off their food storage. They opened their powdered milks, ate a lot less food and learned a lot. One of the big things they missed was fresh fruit and veg. They ran out of potatoes, and carrots after the 1st week. They missed variety and color on their plate. They suggested everybody go buy several cans of dehydrated carrots, onions and potatoes.

4th - I took a current inventory of everything we do have. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of meat, peaches, beans, applesauce and spaghetti sauce we have. We could definitely live off those items for at least 3 months. My parents currently serve as missionaries at the wet pack cannery in Lindon, Ut. So for the last few Christmas we have received food storage items. I love it!!!!!!!!
We also have ove 200 lbs of wheat and 100 lbs of flour and all the stuff (yeast, gluten, honey, salt)to make bread for 1 year. But that still left a lot more to get.

5th - I started purchasing items from either the cannery or Macey's case lot sale.

Do we have everything yet? No, But we're a lot closer, and if we had to we could definitely live for 3 months. Josh's only concern is where to put everything. He has resorted to placing items underneath the beds now. Mental check list, we need a food storage room in our next house. There is a great feeling of peace in preparedness.

Pres Hinckley said,

"What we have experienced in the past
was all foretold,
and the end is not yet. Just as there have been calamities in the past, we
expect more in the future. What do we do?
Someone has said it was not raining
when Noah built the ark. But he built it, and the rains came.
The Lord has said, "If ye are prepared ye shall not fear" (D&C 38:30).
